Using Skype on Incredible in Europe

I am heading to Europe in few days and was wondering if I could make phone calls from my Droid Incredible via Skype app I just downloaded on my phone. Do I risk any additional charges fronm Verizon if I do that? Is all I need to do is put the phone on airplane mode so it works via WIFI? What about Skype WIFI Hotspots they advertise? Any advice will be very helpfull. Cheers!
