using FTP on a SG5

I am trying to use my phone as an FTP to transfer files. I have been able to see both the internal and external storage. The problem is it looks like I do not have permission to modify the files. Do Android phones need to be rooted in order for the to work in the FTP manner?

To the best of my knowledge, you will need a FTP file transfer app. Check this one out and see if it does what you need.

I have tried multiple ftp apps. I see files but I cannot modify them.
