Updating apps you didn't get on the market?

So I have a Droid 1, and I wanted to play Tiny Tower (which isn't available for that device on the market, for some reason) so I went and found the apk and installed it. And it runs pretty decently, actually.

But occasionally it gets updated on the market, but my marketplace doesn't acknowledge that I have the app at all. I have to manually update it each time there's a revision, would that be correct? Is there any way to get the market to acknowledge I have this app?

As far as I know the market will not update apps that were not installed from the market itself. I have an app that I won in a contest from Droid Life that shows up as installed in the market, but it will not update saying "The download was declined because you haven't purchased it."

So if you don't install it though the market I don't there there is anyway to get it to update it.
