Is that that why some people use "rom" on them? I know enough to get in to trouble with this. Just wondering...I have one through work just asking. I am hoping to get rid of it soon. Thanks for the info!

That's mainly why ppl root and ROM, yes. Mainly to try to stay current or to add features.

simple answer is yes
to install a rom you neet to root, and install d2 bootstrap
how you root depends on phones system version found in settings/system/about phone
4.5.601 or 4.5.621
