There are plenty of reasons to buy major flagship devices from companies like Samsung, HTC, and LG. These phones come generally come with the very latest in specs. You are pretty much guaranteed to get the best available display technology, CPU, and design. With these devices you also get superior cameras. Samsung flagships like the Galaxy S7 also come with great features like wireless charging, and waterproofing. The LG G5 came with modularity, while the HTC 10 came with BoomSound 2.0. The only downside to these devices is they are normally not very developer friendly. Unlocking your bootloader often requires you to void your warranty.
Phones like the OnePlus 3 and Xiaomi Mi 5 are incredibly developer friendly and even have their own OEM supported developer forums and communities. If you are a Rom head then devices like these are the ones you should look at even if they don't have the world's best specs.
