I'm trying to set my phone up so it vibrates when I get an e-mail from my GMail account (I have my phone silenced during the day due to work environment), . I figured this would be pretty straightforward (of course, I could be doing something dumb, thus I'm asking here) --I went into Messaging and checked the settings there, but Text Messaging is the only messaging service that shows up; if I go to Messaging settings, "Email" is grayed out. Yet, if I select "Manage Accounts", my Gmail account is there.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? I don't recall this being an issue with my Droid 2; I'm pretty sure I set it up early somehow and forgot about it.

You gmail is not in messaging. You have to open the Gmail app and set it up in there.

Open gmail, press menu, select more, then settings, scroll down to labels to notify at the bottom. Select inbox, then you will see vibrate option. You can set it to vibrate only when silent, never, or always.

Thank you. That option seems incredibly buried for something you would think would be used quite often.
