Turning Notifications off

Is there a way to turn notifications off without turning off the ringer? I tried going in and turning each notification to silent, but this did not work and is pretty inconvenient.

good question. i haven't tried doing the notifications individually, i just kill the volume from the unlock screen.. i DO know that there are some good apps that allow you to customize notifications. "locale" seems to be popular, though i haven't tried it myself.

Thanks, I'll have to look through apps more. I really just don't want my notifications ringing at night when I get an email, but want to have my phone ringer on in case of emergency.
