Total lock up. Can't restart or power off. Razr Maxx HD. Please advise.

I was downloading an update to a few apps when my phone suddenly froze totally. Can't turn it off or back on. Completely non responsive. This is my only phone so I am trying to find out how to do a hard reset or something similar.
Wish I knew what to do.

Try holding power and volume down. Then when it turns off hold the power and volume up and volume down at the same time.

Yea power + volume down for 10+ seconds will cause a force reboot. It simulates a battery pull.

Power + vol up on reboot shouldn't be necessary.
