The Market Spam is... getting out of hand

I would like to see an option for users to set their own filters for what is displayed on their phone; ie: filter out spam apps by dev or keyword.

Agreed! I would love to be able to "Hide all apps from this Developer"

Tried doing that on appbrain.com using the traditional search with a "-DeveloperName" term. Works like a charm. Of course, that's not a long term solution, but it suggests that better (and enduring) search criteria can accomplish the objective.

open source, just the nature of it. Filtering options as people have stated would be cool. I flag with great care, because some dude may love those stupid apps. There is something for everyone.

Its very surprising to me that a company that made its name helping people finding things they were searching for cannot organize the market in a more easily searchable format. Even if you discount the random porn things and soundboards, its retardedly hard to find things in the market.

The bad thing is, do you really want Google deciding what is good and what isn't and censoring stuff like Apple does?

I doubt that anyone (on this forum anyway) wants that. Having said that, however, the OP's comments are well taken. Trying to find a particular app in the Market is an unpleasant chore. And that does not bode well for the future of the Android platform.

But what Google finds as trash might be someone else's treasure. Like the person above posted... do you really want Google to take over the Market and be like Apple?

I don't think anyone wants that but there should be some sort of filtering options such as not listing updated apps, just new apps. You should be able to filter certain developers in your "ignore list" as well.

And how about a tab for "best of/editors choice" which list the best apps in various categories?

I do not believe that limiting market posts by a particular Dev to a certain number at a time would constitute censorship.

Spam is spam. They can upload, not flood.

I think if Google added a few more sub categories that it might make it a little easier to find apps but i agree sorting and being able to ignore a dev is a great idea

Spam is an undesirable side effect of having no approval process for apps. This is a necessary evil for maintaining an open-source framework; lots of extremely useful apps are also possible because of this.

For instance, any large or small business can create its own app to help its employees do their jobs (data sharing, scheduling, corporate directory, etc). They don't have to worry about their app being rejected for breaking some arbitrary rule that may not apply equally to everyone. And Pulitzer prize-winners can express their views without fear of a large, white, fruit-shaped hammer crashing down on them.
