This sounds like something out of some b-rated action movie in which the protagonist leaves the bar and gets assaulted after having too much to drink. Of course, we are talking about a phone here, so no alcohol was involved, but if you are squeamish about seeing a beautiful smartphone tortured you may want to prepare yourself. The above video is very surprising, in that the new HTC One actually can take a great deal of punishment.

How do you think your current smartphone would fare with this level of aggression?

i prefer drop tests on uneven cement surfaces. who the hell is going to hammer or knife their phone?

I am thinking that kids get some of the strangest ideas in their heads. Even if someone isn't going to hit it with a hammer, they might just bang it around. This at least shows it can take some punishment.

Drop tests are useful but can also be unrealistic too. The problem with a drop test is that if the phone hits at certain angles it will come out roughly unscathed. On the other hand, some angles will cause major damage to almost any device.

Of course, the best thing about this test is it shows both the glass and the outer casing are resistant to scratches from keys in a pocket or purse, which is actually pretty common. Plus, it's kinda amusing to watch someone else abuse their device. :)
