Texting special characters

I have a Motorola Droid X. If my first character is a non special character, I can see in the little box above the send button that I still have 159 characters left and will descend from there. However if I start with a special character lets say the spanish "N'" it will show I only have 68 characters left and start descending from there. So whenever I send a txt using a special character I'm limited to only 68 instead of the normal 160. Why is that?

Never really used a special character.

Guess you could switch the phone to spanish? lol
