Terrible Service, will update fix?

I've had my S3 for about a month now and have gotten embarrassingly bad service the whole time. I'm lucky to get 2 bars in my house and don't think I've ever gotten full bars anywhere I've gone. Streaming any sort of music on 3G (or 4G, if I get it) is a joke. This is my 3rd Android phone and had no service issues with my other phones (OG droid & droid charge). I was just wondering if the JB update could potentially help at all? Or is there any way rooting and flashing a custom rom might help? Anything else?

Not sure if JB will help or not but if I was you I would call Verizon and tell them what is going. With my S3 I get better reception than what I got with my droid charge, thunderbolt, galaxy nexus, and razor maxx. So I would have Verizon replace it
