Terminal Emulator Questions

Hi, I've used terminal emulator before to do some basic commands. But I've always read off a site exactly what to type. I would like a more intuitive understanding of terminal emulator. I was wondering if anyone could help me with basic commands, and what terminal emulator is capable of doing. Or any links to terminal emulator faqs/guides would be much appreciated!
