Task Killers/Managers

I've read and heard from quite a few people that task killers are harmful to your phone. I've been using one for a while now and haven't had any problems, but should I get rid of it to be safe? How exactly can it harm my phone?

Since I uninstalled the task killer yesterday my phone has been running a bit faster and actually a lot smoother. Thanks again!
