Talk issues

I an having issues with google talk. I can start a conversation and send a message. The other person will get my message. When they respond I either don't get it or it shows up as an email. Not sure how to fix this.

This issue went away after I signed out of Gtalk and then logged back in.

My problem is that I am not receiving notification when I receive a new chat if the phone is "idle" (the screen is dark) Once I unlock it to use it then I get the notifications. Anyone have an idea what the problem is. I tried to look at the settings but I can't figure it out. HELP!!
