Suggestions for troubleshooting a force close issue with Helix Launcher

Hey guys,

So I am using Helix Launcher because it allows me to dock four apps at the bottom of the display. Making them available no matter what screen I am on.

I get a lot of force closures. Unfortunately I don't get any indication of why it force closed. (On a side note I kinda hate this mentality of not letting the user know why an error occurred. Huge issue with Windows and I thought open source would be better but guess not.)

Anyway, is there anyplace I can check to find out specifically what is causing these force closures? I do have a lot of widgets but that is kinda the whole point of having this phone, so I can have the information I want when I want it. For that I use widgets.

I did clear off all the apps from the stock home screen but I still get force closures.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Scuba,

Is your force close the one where the box pops up asking to fc or wait, or is it just shutting down.

The version I have on my phone, Version 9 in info, would give me the wait/fc box usually on boot, and much of the time when the phone was waking from sleep. Pointing to a memory issue, I think. I fiddled with the avaiable memory settings in my Memory Manger program and that would help some, but what cured it was uninstalling the Setcpu Active Widget. Unfortunately at the time I also killed my boot up profiles in setcpu so I am not 100% sure it was just the widget, but it was certainly at least related to Setcpu and/or memory on the phone, as no other widgets were deleted. I am running Launcher Pro Beta right now with no issues. FWIW...

Thanks for the response. It gives me the Force Close or Report screen. Very rarely get the wait option.

Happens at very random times too. I can be surfing the web with the browser and get a force close from Helix. I could be playing Spades and get a force close. I could be in the app drawer and long press an app and get a force close. I can be doing nothing at all and it will pop up. Sometimes I can go half a day and never see it, other times I will get it every few minutes. Haven't been able to detect any pattern or any consistent reason for it.

Scuba,

Not likely to be much help as I am rooted, and it looks from your sig line that you are not. I think there are two versions in market regular and 2. If you are running two, perhaps try Regular. 2 has certainly had it's share of folks who report problems. Both versions will have the customizable laucher bar. At the very least you could unistall and reinstall the version you have to see if that helps. I do not remember whether or not you can clear the cache on Helix from the applications settings menu, but I would check that first, then perhaps uninstall your version and reinstall then perhaps try the other version, in that order. I know that setting up homescreens can be a pain, but unrooted you have fewer options.

Ps Try checking the Launcher Pro Beta thread. I am running it now, and so far the only downside compared to Helix is not yet being able to customize the launcher bar. The Dev posted he will be working on that when he gets back from vacation. The nice thing about these programs is that you can have them all installed, and test side by side, so no harm no foul.

I'd only add that if you're experimenting with various launchers, download "home switcher" from the Market. It's a widget that enables you to change home screens and set a default launcher easily.

I really like Tag Home, you have the four customizable buttons, and it also divides the tray into different categories, which I find much more useful then the desktop screens, which I fill with widgets :)
It also performed quite a bit faster then Helix 1 or 2 on my phone before I rooted and mod'd it. I'm really interested in trying that Launcher Pro, but I *really* like the categories feature :)

Thanks for the replies, guys. I probably will root my phone at some point when I have time to sit down and really study the process and come up with a workable strategy for doing it.

Think I might want to try that Tag home, adds a feature I would really like to have to one I do not want to give up. What I call a Win Win. Will probably install Home Switcher while I try it out. Gonna suck having to re-setup all my widgets but hopefully I will not have to do so again.

Thanks again

Have you tried launcherpro? I had helixlauncher then I four.d launcherpro and the speed is amazing and I have received zero fc too.

I haven't tried Launcher Pro yet but from what I have heard here on the forum it does not allow you to customize the four icons across the bottom. I do not use the stock browser or messenger and I used Gesture Search instead of Contacts. So not sure how useful it would be for me. If Tag Home does not work out this would be something to fall back on though.

Thanks
