suggested text?

when i type - email or anywhere - i don't get any suggested dictionary words. how do i enable this feature?

Menu-Settings-Language & keyboard- Android Keyboard - bottom 3 options
Menu-Settings-Language & keyboard- Device Keyboard has auto replace/cap/punctuation

Is there a way to ge suggested words when using the physical keyboard not just the virtual one?
