Stupid question re : music

If it's not playing, then it is off for all practical purposes. It won't use any CPU or battery. If the phone gets low on memory it will automatically free inactive apps to make room, so you don't need to worry about what is loaded.

If you have doubts, just go into settings and check your battery usage. It will show you what apps have actually been running and percentage of battery use since you last charged the phone.

If you are really worried you could install and use Watchdog. I haven't used it myself but the reviews are good and it is a better way to manage your phone than the obsolete App Killer method.
