is there any sms app that allows you to send texts over wifi and 3g but still uses the the same sms contacts and notifications? basically when i can only connect to wifi and have no cell phone signal i want to still be able to send and receive text messages

Yeah, you need a VOIP app that can handle texting to send texts over WiFi. GV is the only one I know of, and you'll have to use a different phone number to send from.

A real SMS message is actually part of the voice protocol, not the data protocol, so you need an app with a service that can do the translation from the service to the provider's SMS gateway.

You could also just send an e-mail to the cell provider's E-mail to SMS gateway, so [email protected]

GV isn't a VOIP app. However, it can send/receive SMS via data.
