Slow Learner From Silver Spring, MD

Need all the help I can get. Up until two days ago, I was using an LG VX8700 with VPAK, very limited Internet access. Prior to that I had the LG Dare, which had a horrible touch screen and was actually relieved when it drowned in the toilet. Overwhelmed with all the features and capabilities of this Moto Droid (1) that I won on eBay. Still struggling to set up some of the same stuff I liked on the VX8700; voice announce (does Droid do it?), special ringtones for special contacts, spare battery with a wall charger. I'm sure I'll find lots of help here. :icon_ banana: Lena

edit: Just stumled across the menu to set customizable ringtones for individual contacts

Welcome...Good to see another local guy.

In the contact, hit edit....you can assign different ringtones to each...

I am in Silver Spring too. I am currently using an X, but I have a Droid 1 at home. In the X, in settings, under "Call Settings". there is an option for caller ID readout. I haven't used it, so I don't know if it does text to speech on your contacts, or just reads the number regardless. If this isn't in the D1 now, it probably will be after the Froyo update the week.

Verizon sells a standalone spare battery charger that actually works with virtually all current Motorola batteries (has two sides, and some little sliding gizmos to make it fit different batteries. You can usually get replacement batteries cheaper from resellers than from Verizon, but be careful since Motorola has chips in their batteries to identify them as OEM and may not charge non OEM batteries in the phone itself (again, not sure about the D1 on this, but general Motorola experience. I do know people have had success with Seidieo batteries, which also have their own Wall Charger available).

If you are looking for a deal on some accessories, see the recent post from me about some accessories for sale or trade in the Droid Accessories forum. I'll cut you a deal since you are local and I could drop them off (or you could pick them up) rather than shipping.

Alan
