Skype just received a big update to version 2.1, and it brings additional video support to a large array of devices. Officially, this new version brings full video chat support to 17 new devices. Unofficially it brings support to almost any Android 2.2+ device by simply enabling video support in the settings manually. Here is the list of newly supported devices:
  • Samsung Galaxy S II
  • Samsung Galaxy S
  • Samsung Droid Charge - Verizon
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab
  • HTC Desire (2.2)
  • HTC Thunderbolt - Verizon
  • HTC Sensation
  • HTC Evo 4G
  • HTC Evo 3D
  • HTC Incredible S
  • HTC Desire HD
  • HTC Flyer
  • LG Revolution - Verizon (2.2)
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia ray
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro
  • Acer A5
Above is a video of Skype for Android that you may have already seen, but bears sharing again. Below is a picture of the manual settings for Android 2.2+ devices.

Works for Droid Incredible 2.

However, it is only the Blue icon'd Skype from the Market. The DI2 native app that was preinstalled doesn't do it.

Tried this on Droid 3 this morning. No love for the Moto with this Skype release. At least there are a bunch of VZW phones covered, so their plans to double charge us for video calling are falling by the wayside.

Come on Skype. Bring some fun to the Moto brand!

installed on TB, it only has video for back camera.. says back camera only in settings and if you uncheck the box, no vid calling at all... this is awesome. ;)

What sucks is to have Gingerbread and not be able to use it at all even with the manual settings.

It's annoying that it only works with the back camera for the Thunderbolt. That defeats the purpose somewhat.

We need the Gingerbread update before the front camera can be used with it.

Huh? The hacked version that came out a few months ago was able to use the front camera... That version stopped working with the last Thunderbolt update.

Video calling is pretty useless if it can't use the front camera. Everything is half a$$ with this HTC phone.

Yeah it was hacked specifically for the Thunderbolt. The ffc api isn't supported in Froyo. So Skype probably decided to make one app and just let the compatibility be determined by the APIs available rather than making it work for each device that isn't on GB yet that has a ffc.

FYI the front camera works fine on my thunderbolt with skype 2.1 and gingeritis 3d. So you don't have to wait for the official gingerbread release, you just have to root.
