I have a RAZR maxx I am 5 miles n.e. of a tower and 5 miles s.e. of a tower yet I lose data connection frequently.any possible reasons?I have set the phone on global and 4g/lte

Turn off the 'global' setting, I think your phone is switching bands, thinking there is GSM on a tower serving you when there are none.
There are services that use parts of the GSM band, such as 900 ISM users, and this includes ALL the RF junk, from baby monitors to medical equipment, not to mention RF data/SCADA systems and amateur radio repeaters to name a few.
