I'm doing something nice for my mother-in-law. She has an LG Ally that she uses to tether to her PC using PDANet. At first the Ally was fine, because all she needed was the tether. I didn't realize she'd actually learn to use the phone. Once she did, I realized how AWFUL that phone is.

In any case, a guy I work with just sold me his Droid X for $30. He went an got an iPhone, the loser (lol).

My questions for people who have done this kind of thing before:

1) Do I need to take both phones to VZW?
2) Can I just swap the SIM card out myself?
3) Any "gotchas" with doing this?

I already have possession of the Droid X, pulled the SD card and did a factory reset. The mother-in-law is visiting this weekend, so I want to make the swap as seamless / simple as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Also curious about this. I want to switch SIM cards on phones and was thinking it can't be so easy as just switching the card.

To switch the service all you need to do is have her call Verizon and they can do it over the phone.

This.

Also, I don't think the X uses a sim card, but I'm not 100% sure either.

You can even do it online if you log onto the account. All you need to do after a few clicks is dial the number to program the phone.

Make sure the phone w/ the line you want to transfer is off or in airplane mode.

dial *228 on the X to program and follow the prompts.

Done.

This is assuming the line being transfer is on VZW already.

The Droid x DOES NOT have a sim card, just a micro SD card and all you have to do is the 228 thing to activate the phone on her number.
