The coolest looking smartphone on the planet will soon be shown off in Marvel's next Avengers movie. Marvel teamed up with Samsung to create a completely transparent smartphone for Tony Stark to use in the movie "Avengers: Age of Ultron," coming out later this year.

They showed off the phone at CES 2015 this week. Sadly, the phone is not real. It is a non-working dummy device which will use special effects to make it seem like a smartphone in the movie. Despite the faux nature of the device, it actually might give us a glimpse of a potential smartphone of the future. Samsung is actively pushing the envelope with their YOUM Flexible display technology.

While the demo unit on display might be just a prop, that doesn't mean we won't see something similar come down the pike from Sammy a few years from now. What do you think? How long will it be before we see this device actualized?

In the image below, you can see the final "working" concept of the Samsung phone as it will appear in the movie. Alongside it you can also see several other devices which will be featured in the movie.

I'd venture to guess that it'll be a VERY long time. It's one thing to make the display transparent and/or flexible, but you have to consider all of the internal components. Until there's a transparent material that can conduct electricity, act as an antennae, etc, I don't think we'll ever see something completely transparent like this.

The best case scenario any time soon would be something with a huge bezel to conceal all of the internals and a see-through display in the middle.

Ok, now that more pictures were added, am I supposed to believe that all of the internals are housed in that bar on the bottom?

This thing must be powered by that thing in his chest, because you're not getting ANY battery life once everything else needed to make it a pocket computer goes in there.

I believe he had that removed at the end of Iron Man 3. Maybe they put it in this?

I think we will see something like this sooner than people give it credit for.. but i dont think we will need parts like clear conductors and antenna.. there will be more of a focus on hologram and projection tech.. where the clear face would be more of a backdrop to push the display too.. all components like antenna, projector, etc would be in the bottom..

on another note. i would lose my phone constantly if it were clear.

and regardless of all of the above.. it will still be another $1000 rectangle that we will all have to get our hands on..

more of a novelty item than anything.. not more useful than whats out now.

Actually I was watching how glass is made and they already have transparent conductors that can be printed into the glass. On fact, the display you're holding is glass with electrical conductivity. They also already have transparent displays as well.

If you remember Iron Man 1 Tony had an interesting LG 2700 as well. The extra do dads on it were science fiction at the time then as well. Verizon was the only carrier with the 2700 so they probably got a few extra sales from the movie. I remember Vatothe0, a member here, pointing it out because he knew I had one. Best phone I ever had for reception , call quality, battery life, Bluetooth and the camera still takes shots that I can easily print 5x7s that look sharp and natural. I used to watch Star Trek on it with my baby girl (mediaflo) every day after work until Verizon discontinued the service.
