Yea I'd say ics is a good year away. Most phones dont even have gingerbread yet.

If the GSII comes with 2.3 I think Verizon will push 2.3 to the fascinate. Just like when the Droid charge was getting ready to come out they pushed 2.2

It took a good while for the froyo update. The phone is about to be replaced with a new model as well. I think the chance for gb is there but unlikely. I was happy and relived to get froyo for my wife's fascinate. That said to those that say GB is not all that different I disagree. My X is a better phone with it. Apps can be organized by type, text editing is vastly improved and a few other things. Still it is not a game changer like froyo. If it never happens so be it. She is happy with it . Happy enough to wait for her next upgrade next summer. GS2 will be like 99 bucks by then.
