The rugged smartphone from Motorola, the Defy is going to get an improved version later this fall called the Motorola Defy+. It will still come with IP67 certification (water and dirt resistance), and be made with Gorilla Glass for the screen, but it will also sport a juicier 1GHz TI OMAP 3620 processor, Android 2.3.4, and a 1700mAh battery. This seems like the perfect device for folks that plan on swimming with their phone. It even has decent looks too, which is a bit of a shocker for a "rugged" phone. Sadly, for folks in the United States, it will only be released in Asia, Latin America, and Europe in the fall. Maybe if it sells well, they will bring it here too...

Here's the press release:

Sort of off topic, but can anyone explain why companies choose to release certain phones almost everywhere EXCEPT the US? Wouldn't they make a whole lot more money by selling it in America?

Because they want to give other countries the chance to have other great phones made by them.

I wonder if one of these can be adapted for use on a US network....?

I know a buddy whose looking to go from a normal phone to a smartphone, and he's a bit....rough with his phones.
