Rooting??

Hey everyone!!!

Droid X noob, having just jumped from the BB Storm. I keep seeing/reading about Rooting the phone, but can't seem to find anything as simple as:

1. What EXACTLY is rooting?

2. Why/what benefits are there to doing so?

While I consider myself middle of the road techie/geek, I like to understand something before undertaking it.

I'm completely familiar with and performed numerous times the process of updating/changing OS on the Storm, including beta OS, multiple apps that weren't necesarily 'approved' by Verizon.
