"Rooting" virgin

Anyone have Any experience rooting Samsung Galaxy S (old phone, I know)... I'm a technology beginner but need to do this to try and restore pictures that some ass at Verizon deleted ... Please help?!

Before rooting, give Recuva a try and see if you can recover your media.
