Rooting 101

I am looking to root the phone. Are there basic things I need to know? I see a lot of threads but seem advanced. I assume I should install a backup app just in case. How do I know which apps I can't touch?

Any links on this people can recoomend as well?

You have a better chance at getting correct information over here then in the Droid General Forum which primarily consists of original Droid discussions. Hopefully we will have a hacking section set up soon.

Check out z4root. You should be able to download the apk from xda, seeing as I don't think it's on the market anymore. That will root your phone for you.

As far as backing up, once you're rooted download and backup with titanium backup. Once you do that I would recommend going through and uninstalling some of the blur bloatware that's pre-installed on the device.

Blur is what comes with the phone from Motorola. It's running froyo with blur

Someone sent me this youtube video on rooting. I guess then I would have to figure out what apps I can or should remove and what settings to change

If you want i'll make a list of what I uninstalled with titanium, so you have an idea of what works. I have z4root on my phone so would be able to get it to you as well

yes that info would be very helpful

Give me a second to hop on my computer and give you the list of what I removed after backing everything up.

Using Titanium Backup, go menu > batch > then backup all user apps/system apps

once that's done, here's what you can remove. at least this is all I've removed and had no problems.

When I uninstalled one of these, (I don't remember which) I just got a force close loop, all I did was battery pull and everythign was fine.

If you don't know how to uninstall the apps, just click on it right in TB and click uninstall.

hope this helps!

I can put these apps back if I need to? I see it's a very comprehensive list.

Sorry. Don't know how to edit a prior post on Tapatalk. When I opened z4root. It asks if I want this to be permanent or temporary. I am using 1.3 of z4root

You can also "freeze" apps to test if they will give you an FC.

I would do a batch backup first, then start freezing/uninstalling.

As of yet there isnt an sbf for you to fall back on...be cautious.
