Root help!

Im new to the roms and root. i am unlocked had root but i also took the new ota verison sent out and lost root. from what i understand i need a recovery to do root.. but i also read the you need recovery to root, so im a bit lost. i have matts utility and was wondering if i used the option 1 on it if it will brick the phone or if it will take me back to my old system verison before the latest ota.. thank you
