Does anybody know how long the Motorola service takes to replace the screen? I saw someone here said a month, but that sounds like hyperbole. If it's the only option...I've gone weeks with this cracked screen and it's getting old waiting for screens to become available to the market.

I'm sorry this happened to you, however s*** happens, and that's why they have insurance policies (ps- if you had insurance, you'd still have to spend $50 to replace the phone anyways, so you're not saving a whole lot if you don't damage your phone in your 2 year contract period.)
Actually, the poster didn't say how long he's had the Droid, but if he's had it for 6 months, he would have already paid $36 for insurance, plus the $89 replacement fee. for a total of $125 already... So the price difference between with and with out insurance is only $25... The insurance is STILL a bad bargain, unless you are REALLY prone to damaging your phone... I see Craigslist entries all around my area for $200 Droids now. I'm sure a few of those are owners who don't have a clue that they are still under contract for them, or scams, but I helped a friend get one a few weeks ago, and everything was totally above-board.
From the Verizon web site:
- Advanced Devices**
- $6.00 per month per covered device.
- $89 non-refundable deductible per approved claim.
- Equipment maximum limit: $1500 per completed claim.

Excellent point. With insurance premiums and deductibles so high, sometimes it makes sense to just pay for repairs outright every six months or so and you're STILL ahead of the game. I should probably start a cell phone insurance company!
We did it! We finally have the Motorola DROID glass digitizers coming in next week.

Does this mean you have access to the glass and know how to replace it?
Will you be selling the glass for owners to do their own repairs?
I just broke mine 2 days ago and would love to get it fixed ASAP.
thanks
Joel

You could look at it that way, or you could compare it to my scenario:
Just last week I lost my Droid, and I DO have insurance.. I've had it since November so I've paid between 42-48 in insurance premiums, and I had to pay a $50 deductible (not sure if it was b/c I grandfathered into the insurance plan or b/c I have a high value account or what, anyway..) so I'm out roughly a total of $100 for a new phone, however, they also sent me a new charger which I didn't need, a new sd card, which I also didn't need, and I was able to sell these on craigslist for a total of about 25$. So I'm back down to a 75$ cost. Now, in October/November I'll be upgrading my phone and selling this 'slightly used' Droid for 150-300 on Ebay (depending on the value at that time) paying for the rest of my replacement cost, plust part of the cost of an upgrade. Overall I come out ahead...
unless you end up never using it, virtually every time the insurance is a good choice, especially when you're talking about a $500 device.. you don't normally insure your GPS, Digital Camera, Computer, HDTV, etc. as the poster previously mentioned but you are also not carrying those devices with you everywhere...

To me insurance is more for total loss like dropping in water, losing it in a cab, or having it stolen. Total replacement of the device makes sense, it's repairable damage claims that maybe aren't dealt with well in the cell phone insurance world.
