Reorganizing Contacts List by Last Name

Somehow my Contacts list got moved to my Droid using First Names as the key entry, hence searching for anything is time-consuming and frustrating. I called the Verizon Help Line and two different people told me it is impossible to get Droid to re-sort these listings. Is there another way to do this? thanks GordonD

Not at the moment... I just used my "Search" button and it searches thru my contacts without going to "Contacts":)

Hope this helps.

i had the same exact problem man. i list all my contacts last name, first name basis. then when facebook synced with my phone. half were last name, first name and half were first name, last name. i called verizon tech support they couldnt help me so they connected me to motorola tech support. in the end they said the droid does not have that ability to do last name, first name if you're syncing with facebook. if youre JUST doing GOOGLE contacts then you can though. Its like already preset to first name, last name since it says family name and giving name. im too lazy to fix all my contacts to first name, last name so in my contacts its still half and half :/

OK, can anyone write up a procedure on how to change to lastname, firstname sorting with Google contacts? I can't seem to find that option.

There is no option to sort by last name. If you want to do that, log onto gmail via your PC and manually swap them.

Export the contact list via gmail to a csv file, open with Excel, swap and/or rename the columns for Family Name/Given Name. Delete all contacts in gmail, then import the csv file. Make a backup of the csv file first. Haven't had any need to do this myself so it's untested but should work. It's probably the only way until a future Android update provides a sorting option.

Thanks. Exact same situation here. Oh, well, something else for them to fix. You might be interested in the column by David Pogue in Today's New York Times on the Nexus One phone from Google. Sounds like waiting a while on that one is a good idea, although it does seem snazzy. GordonD
