Red X in notifications - Unexpected error

Hello, I am getting a white X inside a red circle in my notification area up top. Can anyone tell me how I figure out why I'm getting that?

If I pull down the notification bar, the status reads
"Unexpected error...
please click here to help us fix"

(literally with the "dot dot dot" - no info on which app is causing the error, nothing happens if I click it.)

It is likely this is caused by me rooting the phone. Yesterday I rooted it using Pete's Motorola Root Tools then installed WiFi Tether for Root Users. But the root and wifi tether seemed to work OK yesterday, I didn't notice the red X until this morning. I have since unrooted, and also uninstalled WiFi Tether for Root Users. I've also looked in the "logs" folder on my micro sd card but I didn't see any clues there. Is there another place to find event logs?

Thanks for any help. DroidX on 2.3.3

it's not directly because of rooting... as that only gives you more access to your phone...

what side of the notification bar is it on? is it on the left or right?
i'm thinking it might be another app... have have installed any other apps other then the tether app?

Nope, have not installed any other apps in some time... It's on the left side of the top of the phone. Thanks

hmm... interesting beef...
try clearing the cache partition...
turn the phone off..
hold power + home
when the android dude pops up.. press both menu buttons...
use volume down to scoll down to "wipe cache partition"
select it with the power button...
reboot

post script: this will not erase any data... just clear only temporary files

Ah, press "both volume buttons" when the android dude and "!" come up! Got it. Cleared the cache and rebooted. D'oh! Didn't help. Bummer. Thanks for your suggestions though Nemo! Any ideas what I should try next?

hmm... i'd say.. reroot... use an app like titanium back up or my back up pro... back what you want up... then reboot into recovery again and selece wipe data/factory reset this time... then you can use the app you got to replace all the data you just erased...

Oh, maybe this clue would help? I've noticed that my old "Go SMS Pro" that I've had for a year or more doesn't work anymore. And i also noticed the dx got hung at one point, and I had to yank the battery. Maybe I'll try uninstalling Go SMS Pro

it's definitely something worth trying first...

post script: alright... let us know how it goes

May have fixed it! I don't understand why Go SMS Pro would get all crazy the day after I rooted my phone... But I uninstalled it, and am now trying Handcent. Thanks for your help! As a bonus question - any advice for a newbie who has never installed a ROM? Where to start?
