Radio question

Can someone tell me what the radio is? I see everyone saying to flash this radio to run this Rom. I am trying to learn everything so I can start flashing roms and stuff but I don't want to brick my phone. So any info would be great.

They are refering to the baseband. Its the software that controls the radios.
