QR Codes for inventory

I've been looking for a smartphone APP that allows me to assign QR codes to information such as inventory. I have to do quarterly inspections on my people and it would be great if I could just affix a QR code to the items that need checking. This way I could walk up to them, scan their items, the serial numbers would pop up and show that the items are still in their possession. Anyone have any experience with something like this? I've found many QR apps but none that do something similar to this.
