Port phone number - tablet app texting - text plus?

I am looking to convert my existing phone line to a tablet data plan. I would like to keep the number from the phone that I have had for 10+ years and use it to*text from my verizon tablet. I currently use Google voice on my tablet but I am unable to port my 814-241-xxxx number to google voice. I would like to find a way to make this work or an alternative solution. I have looked at text plus app but im not sure if will let me port my number or use it without a texting plan . Please help me text from my tablet with my current phone number

I thought all tablets ran on a WiFi connection or a 3g conection. You don't need a phone number. Google voice uses WiFi as well.

Texting from GV does work but not with the number I want to use. Porting my number to GV is "unavailable"
