Last night I turned my phone off ( normally leave on but it annoyed me with a notification around midnight for an email even though it was supposed to be sleeping like me). when I turned it on this morning I had an update downloading and installing with no explanation. when I looked at the screen it was updating 35 applications. My system version is now 21.44.8, is this new??

New to you, but it was released back in December '14. It had to do with Advanced Calling 1.0.

Well, then I'm not sure what it would be. What is your Android version? I'm 4.4.4 and my System version is 21.44.8. Also, my Turbo came with 4.4.4

If you changed to ART I believe it does the "optimizing apps" thing every time the phone turns on. I think FoxKat had something similar to this happen

That is it exactly, I switched to ART a couple weeks ago and had not turned the phone off since. I now realize the apps were optimizing rather than updating. So each time we turn off and on ART will optimize, mystery solved. As a side note, the first time I switched to ART I had some issues and went back to DAL, this time everything seems to be running fine.

ART is supposed to be right-at-home with 5.0.

Lollipop was designed from the ground up to use ART, so it should improve performance by as much as 100% -- or doubling performance, as the marketing experts would say.

Yes it was me who reported on this. There is one additional piece of information I'll add. ART did give me difficulties. At first it was fast and smooth but eventually I discovered significant to severe problems with functionality. Also the fact that it has to recompile all those apps with each reboot is indicative that they are not stored in their newly compiled form but are tossed once the phone is shut down. This is why they recompile (or "optimizing"), when powering back up.

I would suggest we stay away from ART for the time being. @furbearingmammal indicated that ART WILL be the runtime that we will want to use once 5.0 (or some further iteration thereof), drops. I personally can't wait. I am not so anxious for Lollipop as I am for the boost in performance. I love that my phone is snappy and handles most anything I can throw at it, but I have experienced the extremely rare stall or lag and that has a lot to do with how hard I run it. So any boost in performance or better architecture of the OS to improve efficiency will be very appealing to me. Others may notice absolutely NO performance improvement but will certainly notice the new layouts, GUI and either "enhancements" or "changes" to the way it operates.

What is ART?

SENT BY MOTOROLA DROID TURBO
Usually pretty stuff that hangs on the wall that you never notice again after the first day OR its stuff your Wife sits on every flat surface in your house so it's like a combat zone just trying to find a place to sit your twinkie and YooHoo.
