I've had the Droid 1 since March 2010 and it always worked great until two months ago. If I open a program (e.g. Facebook) and then close it, the home screen is blank. It can take several minutes to reload and allow me to do anything. The apps drawer is likewise blank. If I turn the phone off and let it sit for a minute, I can turn it on and everything is back. Sometimes it takes several tries.
I've cleared my caches. I've got over 75MB of free memory on the phone and 4GB on the SD card. I don't have advanced task killer or any other programs that people say might cause this problem. I don't have a replacement home screen app and my Droid is not rooted.
I'm really close to wiping the entire phone but then I'm just months away from upgrading and don't know if it's worth the trouble. If anyone has another suggestion on what's wrong, I'm all ears!
