Opening apps

Is there a way to view and open apps without using the app drawer?

You can create a shortcut to any application by going into the app drawer and long pressing the app icon and placing it on your homescreen -

Sorry, I should have clarified. I want to use the option to remove unused apps from my app drawer.

But if I do that, how do I use them on the rare occasion that I need to?
