Regulatory symbols on devices can be removed, shown in software instead
The backs of smartphones will become slightly better looking, after a bill concerning the labeling of electronic devices has been signed into law by President Obama. The E-Label Act, created by Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), will allow manufacturers to leave off a large amount of the logos and other regulatory iconography from the device itself.

Instead of appearing on the back, the logos can be made available to view within software, reports The Hill, be it as an option within the device's menus, or when a device boots up.

While the E-Label Act will make the rear casing of smartphones and tablets cleaner than before, some remnants will continue to exist on devices. Aside from manufacturer and carrier branding, the CE logo will continue to appear, as it is a mark mandated by the European Union.

I wish they would make it so carriers have one of two options, but not both: Brand the phone, or fill your phone with useless apps, but you can't do both.

It probably isn't up to him at all. I doubt it even shows up near his job description. That seems more like an FCC thing. And it really doesn't solve the complaints that most people have about carriers marking their phones.

A bill must pass both houses of Congress by a majority vote. After it has passed out of Congress, it is sent along to the President. If the President signs the bill, it becomes law. It's the process set by the US Constitution.

Very true...that is the process to pass a law within the US. But that could only affect phones sold in the US. Our President and Congress can't create laws that affect phones sold all over the world.

Agreed.. I don't think they were referring to a worldwide change.

An aftermarket case covers carriers icons on the back but I've yet to find an aftermarket case that deletes bloatware. [emoji202]

That's true, and for the most part I use a case, but I pay for my devices in cash up front. Honestly, it doesn't really bother me that much, I just like to complain.

I just think it's ridiculous that our govt is telling businesses what they can and can't do with their phones. If you don't want a carrier branded phone, don't buy the dang phone! It's just one more example of the govt sticking their nose where it doesn't belong IMO.

Disagree with you there, sort of. If they were loaning it to us then it would be their phone but because the consumer purchases it, it is ours. With that said there are other things that need to be done other than worrying about a logo. Nice to see we solved the debt issue, healthcare issue, and we got Isis handled. All this free time guess it is time to work on the things at the bottom of the list.

I see that this was a bipartisan cause ....I guess those hideous logos brings together people from across the aisles.
