Notification sound doesn't' equal text sound.

Aren't they supposed to be the same? I set my notification sound and it works for mail.......but a different sound is "stuck" as my text tone.

Any thoughts on how to rectify that?

The stock texting app actually allows you to change it via message settings.

Open text app, touch the menu button (3 line button) you'll see message settings. At the bottom you can adjust notifications for the app.

Yeah, you have a generic notification tone setting under general settings but you can also specify unique tones for both texts and emails by going to the settings menu when you are actually in the text or email app (hit menu button). :thumbup:
