This year was supposed to be the year we saw display embedded fingerprint scanners. The technology exists, but no OEM was able to make it cheap and reliable enough to actually include it in this year's phones. Instead we ended up with Samsung phones having the scanner in a less than ideal position, and the iPhone X ditched the scanner altogether. It looks like Samsung is getting closer to making this tech work.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts the Galaxy Note 9 will have the display embedded fingerprint scanner. The optical scanner will allow users to unlock their devices by touching an area of the display. Kuo also says that there are currently three companies trying to work on a contract with Samsung to supply the part to power optical fingerprint scanning. We were certainly hoping to see the feature as early as the Galaxy S9, but it may not come until later unfortunately.
