Not enough space to install item

I am getting the error "not enough space to install item" when trying to install new apps. I have tons of room and have set to install to SD by default. I don't have any experience with rooting or hacking or anything. What's the deal? Why am I getting this problem?

Have you tried deleting text messages and\or delete internet cache?
