Noob Rom Choices

Hey all. I want GB on my phone pronto! Can anyone recommend a rom for a first time rooter? i really have no clue what the difference between these roms are.

ZombieStomped is as close to actual GB as you'll get. The bloat has been removed, and a few tweaks.

Apex GB is AOSP and it's the fastest of the current GB ROM's.

CM7 is also AOSP, and the most customizable ROM.

Liberty is still in BETA, but people still like it. It's also very customizable, but not as much as CM7.

Of the current GB ROM's, I've liked ZS the most because I don't need customizations.

CM7 is the newest...just sorted out really in the past week or two.

I'd agree that Zombie is the best ROM for a "beginner" to start with - installs and runs w/out issue, performs well, and closest to the "normal" GB experience.

CM is the purest Google experience, and has the benefit of being based on the long-running and well developed CyanogenMod code base...if you're on Froyo now then it's also the simplest to install at this point:

- Root your device
- Install ROM Manager
- Flash Clockwork Recovery
- Bootstrap into Recovery
- Wipe Data/factory reset
- Format /System
- Install CM7
- Install Google Apps
- Reboot

are there guides for those steps for CM7. I was thinking of giving liberty a try. seems to be quite a bit of people who enjoy. Maybe i should just go CM7. the steps you said are

- Root your device (used z4root...rooted
- Install ROM Manager - (Installed)
- Flash Clockwork Recovery (this is part of rom manager?)
- Bootstrap into Recovery (backs up current rom, or backs up ENTIRE system)
- Wipe Data/factory reset (done in bootstrap menus)
- Format /System (done in bootstrap menus)
- Install CM7
- Install Google Apps
- Reboot

I was following http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-2-hacks/124643-very-easy-guide-rooting-backup-rom-flashing-d2.html. I just finished rooting the device and now having bootstrap backing everything up.

Should i not have followed this guide?
is bootstrap backing up the entire system... apps and user data and all?

Also. I have Titanium Backup Pro. What info specifically needs to be saved besides User Apps. The guide is saying that only apps can be restored on the new rom unless it is the exact same rom and phone that was used when making the titanium backup.

is there anyone to save app preferences or is that pretty much lost when you restore missing apps on a new rom install?

Considering that you are going to be going from froyo to gb system data will differ and shouldn't be backed up and restored as it can/will cause problems. Just batch backup all user apps + data. Once you are on you're new rom you can get Titanium Backup (+ Pro) from the market and simply batch restore from the backup it made to your sd card, its very simple, it will prompt you as to whether you want to load app, data or both etc. From personal experience, I have found that if possible its best to let all my apps sync from the Market first and then restore any missing + data. JUst remember thats the main diff between sync with google and TIBU, TIBU does data + apps.

I have read through that ENTIRE Dev thread (Yeah, it took a while) and it seems that Titanium Backup is causing some issues with CM7. I would recommend using "MyBackup Root" instead. It also has more options. (It allows for backup of SMS, MMS, Contacts, Calendar, etc.)

Also, I have learned the hard way that if you DO restore data from the apps, you need a reboot before most of that data is actually used by the apps. So even though it doesn't specifically tell you to do so, you may want to reboot after restoring your apps and/or data.

I think you know this already, but:

- Flash Clockwork Recovery (this is part of rom manager?)

You flash Clockwork Recovery from ROM Manager - it's the first choice at the top of the app when you open it.

- Bootstrap into Recovery (backs up current rom, or backs up ENTIRE system)

Droid2 Bootstrap is another app (which it sounds like you now have) that allows you to boot into recovery. You ONLY use Droid2 Bootstrap before you install CM7...after installing CM7 you should not install/use Bootstrap as it will fubar your device and required you to start over with an SBF.

i dont even have GB installed yet. The guides i am reading say to use Bootstrap to make a backup, boot into recovery mode, and find the .zip file on the sdcard

i am following Droid 2 Gingerbread (2.3.3) - Release - PreRooted

I also used MyBackup Pro to backup apps and app data and contacts and all that jazz.
