I am new and ignorant! I just got a verizon lg droid and I am trying to figure out how to limit my data usage. I need ANY help!

I have not used it as I have unlimited data, but I believe droidwall in the market will help you.

Wifi does not use your data. This is true for any carrier. You can check this using the My Verizon App under data usage.

Turning off the data will not effect the phone. You still get calls, email & text. Weather widgets will not update. You will need it on to use your browser & market. Turning it off helps save your battery.

So, what suggestions are there for conserving data usage? Is my driod using data when it's just laying around and I am not viewing any websites? Like I get a notification when I have a message on facebook - so is it using data when I get those? If I make sure I log off fb and yahoo, etc., will that limit data usage?

I am not the most versed since I don't use it. I believe ther are two versions, one for root users and one for nonroot users. It wiln block apps that use 3g data from accessing data(unless you have given it permission), thereby limiting data useage. Search for it in the market.

There should be(in your settings menu) a battery manager setting. It determines when and how data is retrieved on your phone. Perfomnce mode will let it sync at will, nighttime will oisable data at night, and custom let's you decide when it syncs.

Also, if you use fb, twitter, or any social networking widget/app, you can access that account and set when it syncs. Most, by default, will sync every 15 minutes. I would set it to minimum every 2-3 hours, or even to sync manually. Otherwise, yes, your phone can use data even when you don't know it.
