new droid x2 owner looking for advice on apps, memory management and backup

Got a Droid X2 from Verizon. Trying to figure out memory management and file structure, looking for best apps.

any way to change or silence "droid" startup sound?

You'll need to root the phone to be able to mess with the boot animation and its sound. The first thing I would recommend would be to root the X2. It will let you get the most out of the device.
