Has anyone else ever gotten a new phone with new service and Verizon installed an used phone number? I Just got the Phone Thursday and the calls and texts for the prevous owner of the number won't stop!!
Can you demand a brand new --unused phone number?

No but they will change it for you....
I am sure a truly unused number is a white elephant these days...

An old number isn't suppose to be used for a certain amount of time. I want to say 6 months but I'm not certain.

I use to work in collections and I can tell you that it does happen. I've called people who just got the cell and it's an old number. Then again our information could have been old too, but they definitely recycle the numbers.

They should change the number for you with no problem.

Call them, explain in a rational manner what is going on, they should be able to help you.

They DO recycle numbers. It can be a nightmare for some people, as they keep getting phone calls about some deadbeat who owes money so the wind up getting harassed because of a previous owner. I thought it was funny.

Of course, everything is funny as long as it doesn't happen to you. :)

My sister went to the UK to study abroad one semester, and turned her service off while there. When she got back she was given a new number, and all of her friends decided to call her knowing she was back (facebook), but they were calling the old number. From what I understand, a minimum of 20 people called her old number, hahaha. Sucks to be that guy :-p

I've had this happen to me too, the collections people didn't believe me after repeated attempts by me to convince them that I was not LAKEISHA!

Ive had the same number for about 8.5 years now and didnt have that problem but my number has been thru 3 carriers and I cant even count how many phones

While they will change it for you, they will charge you unless you use the magic word "harassing". If you are getting harassing calls, they must change it for free. Might be law or just policy, not sure.

I recently switched numbers after getting wrong numbers for a guy for over 5 years. I toughed it out because I figured they would stop. I would get calls in the middle of the night saying he needed to do something about a train blocking a track somewhere. Some of the callers would get insistent (harassing) so I finally changed it, figuring it would be easier to do now before we ditch our home landline.

Just got back from Verizon. They did change number but wanted 15 dollar charge!. I fussed somewhat--- then salesman went to manager and returned and waived charges.
Thanks for replys
