MTP Options for linux

I've tried mounting with mtpfs, but that works sometimes, other times it doesn't some times it's read only. Right now, I'm using OpenSSH, but that's not the most reliable method.

Also, does anyone know if it would be possible for a custom rom (Say, CM9) to ditch MTP in favor of normal Mass Storage?

Can't automount, manually mounting I can browse and go from phone to computer but can't send files the other way. gMTP works similarly-can't upload. Haven't had a lot of time to mess with it though.
On debian testing XFCE.

Not a fan.

Using straight ftp on my home network. Works fine and fast enough.
