It actually works based on the magnetometer (used for compass) that is in the phone.

I've used it on my G1 and I found it to be relatively accurate.

Name of the app is called "Compass". Developed by Synaptic, Inc.

I like GPS Status. It has a Compass, magnometer and all the GPS info right there for you. It also has radar mode which I use to find my car in parking lots.

I wonder if it could help find keys if they were lost in a pile of clothes or beneath a seat or cushion. lol

click the menu button and then click radar.

The ZP compass is about the coolest thing out there. It points to magnetic and true North, and it also points to the sun and moon (with an image of each when they are actually above the horizon. Nifty toy.

I never heard there is any metal detector app for android. Maybe it will be developed in the near future.
