Lost contacts (people) and Gmail does not have them

My wife and I both have the Incredible. While I am happy with it, she is less than pleased at the moment, after losing all her contacts.
All her contacts and phone history are gone. Went to Gmail to retrieve them and there is nothing there. If anyone knows of a way to retrieve contacts that were synced with Gmail but not showing up....please help.
